JOZO KLJAKOVIĆ MEMORIAL COLLECTION
ABOUT THE MUSEUM
The Memorial Collection of the academically trained painter Jozo Kljaković (1889-1969) is located in his family home at No 4 Rokov perivoj, in Zagreb. The house was designed by architect Stjepan Planić and built in 1930. Jozo Kljaković bequeathed it to the City of Zagreb in 1969, along with a number of paintings and drawings, his collection of books and a few pieces of furniture, wishing the items to be assembled in a collection open to the public after his death (Deed of Gift dated Sept 17, 1969). In 1983, the Center for Arts Education of the City of Zagreb was awarded the custody of the Collection, which it manages since.
The collection comprises 1134 items, including artworks (oils on canvas paintings, drawings and sculptures), furniture, books and other items. Almost all the paintings in the Collection date from the artist’s later period, the 1950s, during which he lived abroad. Residingin emigration for over two decades (in Italy and Argentina), the artist’s longing for his native land is most visible in numerous paintings portraying the scenery native to him; his works often depict Vranjic and Solin, as well as the people, landscapes and traditions of Dalmatia, through historical and religious themes (Vranjic, Stretching the Net, The Archers of Domagoj, The Raising Of Lazarus). The garden surrounding the house also contains the sculpture by Frano Kršinić, The Flute Player.
